Documentation : statistics

Various statistics are available on the pictures used by the plugin. Some are visible only by the site administrator.

Here is the look to the user version of the statistics dialog box. The last button is used to login on Wordpress as administrator in a new browser tab.

In the following, you'll find a description of statistics items available for users and admins.

Plugin usage statistics

The statistics dialog box is launched with clicking on the plugin logo at the top of the window. It starts with displaying a graph with a split of pictures per year and another one by format (portrait, landscape, square). It also provides the number of pictures, albums, groups, top people, authors and cameras used in the shared pictures.

Then with the most displayed pictures, shown with their thumbnails. You can remove those who are bothering you for any reason with the delete button. The admin can reset the table of pictures, albums and groups viewed used to generate this view.

Then, you have the cameras, lenses and shooting specs of all pictures. You can click on any of these and it will launch the search mode on the item. This view also shows apertures, exposures, ISO settings, authors and licenses used in the pictures.

The hashtag function is used to make an inventory of used hashtags, to show the related pictures, to remove these hashtags from the picture descriptions and to rename these hashtags. It's also possible to download the pictures containing a given hashtag in their name or description. This is also done with using the plugin search feature with the hashtag as searched text.

Then, a trafic chart per week and the list of groups, albums and pictures that were directly accessed.

The links between albums and blog posts in the same Wordpress instance. It shows the widgets used in the Wordpress site with a SHORTCODE as well as the url pointing to the plugin. A its beginning, this screen also shows the view generated per source and for widgets embedded in third party web sites using the JavaScript form of the widget.

Download statistics showing which user has downloaded which pictures. This is the only personal usage data that is stored in the database. When the ZIP file is still present on the server, it can be downloaded by the administrator. In that case, the number of downloads is in bold text and is cliquable to launch the download. This is particularly useful to understand which multiple selection pictures sets are downloaded.

The images base updates history is available as a table listing the date, update action type, details, the related images folder and picture (optional). The table can be filtered by action type or by search in folder and picture nameswith the search area. The triangle button saves the current filter so that it's automatically applied when launching the report another time. Folders have an active hyperlink pointing to them in the plugin. It works only when the folder still exists. It may not be there anymore when it corresponds to a removed folder. In that case, the hyperlink will show the nearest folder in the images base. The delete button can reset the action filters and display back all actions. .

The browser user agents accessing the plugin, with splitting the usefull ones from the bots (search engines, etc). Regular user hits are also split between landline, tablets et smartphones, giving an idea of the proportion of mobile users who are using your plugin. There is also a split between operating systems and browsers for each support (PC/Mac, tablets, smartphones).

The time spent for each mySQL request launched when starting the page, changing groups, albums and search results. It can be used to identify where the database engine is spending time for optimization purpose. This data is not saved and available when the user is not logged as Wordpress site administrator. For safety performance reason. This is also desactivated for tools used in command line like photo-database.php and photo-batch.php, to avoid memory leaks with large photo library processing (the saved queries table size increases for each scanned picture or album).

The sql requests linked to Photo-Folders are displayed in bold text.

The last JavaScript errors generated on the client, which are stored on the server. The table can be reset.

This screen gives also access with the button "Server diagnostics" to a screen with some server diagnoctics data: used software versions (Wordpress, PHP, the availability of the PHP GD library enabling images processing), write access to specific server folders where Photo-Folders needs to create files and the existence of various Mysql server tables.

The last button is used to send an email to the site admin or anybody else, containing server and client side plugin diagnostics. It can be used for technical support.

This screen can be useful if you face difficulties to install Photo-Folders. It will guide your towards a solution such as getting the right server software or the right folders access rights. The current PHP user identified in the diagnostic must be the same as the folders owner for folders where the plugin must have write access (rights like "755"). But rights must not be set at "777", which would create a security risk for the plugin and Wordpress site.

This screen also shows the available PHP memory and the required memory to compress images with the largest size defined in the plugin settings (in a ratio 3/2). The maximum resolution that can be compressed is also indicated. Larger images won't be ingested in albums by the plugin.

The size of the main folders used by the plugin on the server and the size of the plugins tables in the Mysql database. This can take time to compute on large pictures galleries.

Maintenance functions

Some maintenance features are also available in the statistics dialog box.

The first enables the administrator to create an new group and a new album.

The second enables the administrator to undelete deleted groups. Once undeleted, the groups shows up in the plugin interface.

The third (below) enables the administrator to download all text description files for groups, albums and pictures in a ZIP file respecting the folders hierarchy. It can then be unzipped in the folders containing the original files of your pictures. The fourth function enables the administrator to rescan all server images folders. For large pictures galleries, it can take a lot of time, so use it with caution.

Two tabs are used to detect duplicate picture names. The first is applied throughout all albums. From the list, active links are usedd to launch a search in another browser tab with the related pictures and to rename it with the multiple selection features of the plugin. Pictures can be renamed sequentially with the same name root if you need to have distinct picture names in all your albums.

In the other tab, you get the list of duplicate names within albums, with names that are distinct only because of differences in accented characters or not accented characters. You'd then better rename the pictures and normalize the use of accents or no accents. Links help you create a search on the names in their albums in another tab. You can then proceed with renaming the pictures sequentially. These duplicates have to be avoided since they prevent the display of picture thumbnails. This is due to the thumbnail pictures using a name extracted from the picture names and with removing accents from accented characters.

The groups and albums scan button is used to scan groups and albums in the plugin user interface when pictures were recently uploaded with FTP. It avoids using the PHP command photo-batch.php with an SSH session, a feature that is not always available with shared hosting services.

After its activation, the scan dialog shows the groups and albums found on the server storage (in wp-content/photo-albums, unless the name of the pictures folder was changed in the plugin settings). When a group or album is already scanned and in the pictures database, the text shows up in white (over black, or the other way around). When a group or album is detected in the server storage but is not yet in the pictures database, it shows up with a red label indicating "Not scanned".

Here are the buttons and elements available in this dialog:

  • Scan selected folders: it's clicked when the folders to scan have been properly selected. The base usage is to scan folders with a red label "Not scanned" which are pre-selected when the dialog is launched. It can be completed with existing folders which were modifiedthrough some FTP uploads or change (renames, deletions).
  • Selecting all folders: it will then all be selected to be scanned . <:li>
  • Unselect all folders: you'll then need to manually select some folders before launching a scan.
  • Removing from the list unselected folders. It cleans the view!
  • Show only groups or album. It's usefull to avoid a scan of both groups and its albums, which creates redundant server workload.
  • Aborting an ongoing scan, which will be stopped after the end of the current folder scan (not yet implemented).
  • Label indicating the number of selected folders, and when a scan is ongoing, the name of the last scanned folder and it position in the list of folders to scan .
  • Buttons to individually select or unselect group and albums in the list.

After the launch of the scan for selected folders, a label shows the name of the last scanned folder. The label change can take some time if the ongoing processed folder has a large number of pictures to scan, and for which thumbnails must either be created or updated. The folder row then shows up in green.

At the end of the scan, scanned folders are in green and their number of pictures is documented.

The last button enables the user to move back to the site home page. It will be displayed in another browser tab.
